Hello all , as you can probably tell by now I have quite the affinity for Soviet hardware. Using just the 4 halves of the Sharik sphere and the main instrument panel of the 1/24th scale Revell kit I will scratchbuild the cockpit of Gagrin's capsule and simulate the exterior as she sits today in the RKK Energiya museum in Korolyov Russia.

Vostoks are such an enigma that I've never attempted one, even though I love the looks of them. I'll be watching this with interest as well since it appears you are off to a good start.

Don, Mike, Rob and Jay your interest in this build means so much as do the encouraging words you speak. This is build no.2 and had it not been for the link below and a build done by Vincent Meens I doubt I would have tackled this. Vincent chronicled his build with very easy to follow photographs. His capsule was built in the pre-flight configuration.

In the pictures so far I have the ejection seat tray, hatch flange, and some of the initial bulkheads in place along with the recovery section. I used paper templates to test fit the various components first before making them out of plastic card. Imagine being stuffed into a cannonball and being shot into space, a brave man he was Mr. Gagarin. :salute:

Steve, You have plenty of good reference for this build and from what I see so far you're on a roll! :thumbsup2:

Well, I was going to say he was "having a ball" myself, but decided not to "roll" that way. ;) But it all comes "around" I guess.

Some update photo's. Jay and Mike, you guys should be on stage. :D The Sharik sphere halves with the instrument panels and shelves fitted. I have also built the ejection seat frame, imagine what that was like ejecting from a cannonball  . If you look closely in the last picture of the real vehicle on the right side just above the small black square(right near the arrow) you'll see a 60's era AM radio receiver with push buttons and tuning knobs, scary. Take a look at the last link provided to see it.

vivkulan, hope I don't disappoint

Great subject matter, Steve! I too will be watching this build with interest. It's certainly a little different from your average Bf-109/F-15/Spitfire build.

Regards,

Jason

Yes, Don, Mr. Zevon was one of a kind. He is sorely missed.

Best Regards,

Jason

Thanks Jason. Here is an update on the progress showing cockpit interior shelving and the recovery section. Also in these pictures is the first piece of padding applied surrounding the cockpit entrance. Trying to as close as possible replicate the pattern of the real hardware I used a heavy packing paper that was embossed to re-create the pattern on the crafts interior padding. I have also started to cover the interior with this paper.

Thank you Holmes. The interior padding is now complete with a coat of paint on it. The main instrument panel is from the kit, the panel on Gagarin's left is scratchbuilt.
