I am starting a cust build, he wants a 53 done in vietnam airforce cammo. After looking at pics online it seems that none of them were painted the same, some look like two colors and others look like 3. What is the correct cammo is it dark green/olive/tan or just olive and tan??

USAF in Vietnam camo would be tan/green/green over grey. Cybermodeler has the scheme fro the Air Force Tech Order.

Depending on the quality of the picture, lighting, etc. sometimes the two greens on the SEA scheme tend to merge together and look the same. As already noted, I think all AF -53's had the standard SEA scheme.

That CyberModeler scheme doesn't look right to me. It calls for Tan/Brown/Green over Gray. The SEA Scheme I have always seen is Dark Green (FS34079), Medium Green (FS34102), and Dark Tan (FS30219) over White (FS37875).

You are right. I did not notice it before, The cybermodeler scheme is a South WEST Asia camo scheme. My bad. Try here, page D-28.

That's the right one.

The Cybermodel diagram is the one in the 1998 copy of USAF TO 1-1-4 for the HH-53. That TO also has a diagram and color chart for "H-53 Aircraft Standard Camouflage Pattern" which is the pattern you describe (FS34079, FS34102, and FS30219), but still over gray (FS36622).

The SEA scheme lower surface color was light gray(36662), not white. 36662 is very pale, almost white, but is still a gray.

I thought it was a gray, but couldn't remember for sure. I was thinking it was called Camouflage Gray and couldn't find an FS # for it. Thanks for the assist.

Long before model paints matched FS colors, we used to make this grey using the old square Testors bottle of flat white. You added 9 drops of flat black and three drops of flat yellow, and it was a pretty decent match.
